Get the best reliability with domestic heating systems
When it comes to domestic heating, reliability is everything. Reliable heating systems ensure that the comfort of the home remains intact, but efficient pumps also go a long way to provide this. Pumps are responsible for 10% of the total electricity in the world, simply due to the fact that many of them run inefficiently. With a high-efficiency solution, however, you will not only bring savings to your customers, you will also reduce their environmental footprint.
Putting the saving of energy into perspective
While an old pump may still function adequately, it can consume up to 17 times more energy than a modern Grundfos pump. For instance, comparing an aging UPS 25-60-180, operating at a constant curve speed III with an 84 W* power draw, to an ALPHA2 25-60-180 running in AUTOADAPT mode with a mere 5 W* usage, the energy efficiency becomes evident. The simple math here is 84 divided by 5, resulting in a factor of 17.
Further optimization is achievable, with power consumption as low as 5W, leveraging the pump's efficiency and operating it with a differential pressure control mode.
For a more technical understanding, consider the formula below. To heat a mid-80s mid-terrace house, a heating system must provide 4.6 kW. Factors like insulation, dimensioning, and outside temperature play a role. Using radiators at a ΔT of 20 °C, the system flow can be calculated:
V[kg/h] = Q[kW]/c[kWh/kgK]x∆T[k] = 4,6/0,001163x20 = 202kg/h ≅ 0,2m3/h
Comparing an old UPS circulator at setting III (more than necessary but what often is seen in installations) consuming 84 W to a high-efficiency ALPHA2 in proportional pressure setting I, consuming only 5 W, reveals substantial energy savings. Considering a mid-terrace house, the electrical energy savings when switching to an ALPHA pump can be calculated:
∆E[kWh] = (PAwg.,UPS - PAwg.,ALPHA)/1,000 × T = (83.5-4.6)/1,000 × 2,500 = 315.5 kWh
∆Price[EUR] = ∆E × u = 315.5x 29/100 = £91.5
With the cost of purchasing and installing a new ALPHA pump at €450 and an annual saving of £91.5, the new pump pays for itself in less than 4 years, based on an electrical energy price of £29 per 100 kWh*.
Despite a well-heated house, it's essential to recognize the cost and inefficiency. Note that this calculation doesn't consider changes in heating demand. Controlling room temperature and potentially lowering the return temperature to the boiler could further contribute to energy savings.
